War Trophy- 1915

The inspiration for this figure came from this photograph of British and Indian
wounded at Neuve Chapelle, on the way to the hospital base, 1915. sporting their war-trophies.

“On 10 March 1915, following a preliminary bombardment, the British attempted to capture
Neuve Chapelle, located midway between Bethune and Lille. As happened elsewhere on
the Western Front, the bombardment was largely ineffective, leaving intact much of the
barbed-wire entanglement in front of the German positions. As a result, the Allies sustained
very heavy casualties in the attack, particularly in The Duke of Cambridge’s Own
(Middlesex Regiment) and The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) of the British IV Corps.
The Meerut Division of the Indian Corps played a major role, and despite German
counter-attacks, succeeded in capturing the town. Unfortunately, there were delays
in sending further orders and reinforcements forward. At midnight on 12 March
General Sir Douglas Haig halted the offensive. The Allies had gained a small area
of land at a cost of over 12,000 casualties.”

Gefreiter, 1st [Bavarian] Ski Battalion, 3rd Light Infantry Regiment.

This private heads off to war traditionally festooned with flowers for
good luck from loved ones. The green embroidered ‘S’ on collar
inspired the nickname ‘snake hunters’.
By September 1915 the Alpenkorps were advancing through Serbia.

Parts list:
head-Dragon, mustache added, head repainted
body-Dragon slimmed
ski Litewka [tunic]-the SS WWI tunic is the base for this mod. I un-stitched cuffs
and reformed them, then used the excess cloth to form the cuff gathering straps.
The new breast pockets were made from two different types of Dragon WWII
tunics [one for the pleated pouch and one for the flap.] The lower pockets on the
SS tunic were removed and repositioned. BGT buttons were painted to simulate
horn and affixed to tunic. The tunic, along with cap and pants, were painted field
grey. The piping on cap, tunic and pants painted light green [light inf.]

ski cap- [styled after the Austrian ski cap]- the bill and ear flap were removed from
a Dragon WWII service cap. A new bill was made from leather and painted field grey.
The ear flap was further un-stitched and re-shaped then re-attached. “Horn” buttons,
National and Bavarian cockades [made from small plastic disks, painted] and the
edelweiss pin [came on original cap and has been altered to more closely
resemble the WWI type] were attached.
flower bouquets- made from dried weeds, paper and wire arranged and painted
walking/hiking staff- fashioned from twig and shaped brass finial
gloves- DML covered w/layer of fake snow and painted to simulate fuzzy wool
socks- made from arms of gray 1/6 sweater
puttees- made from flannel strips dyed brown
Mt. boots- DML weathered
bread bag sling- SS reworked to be more correct
ammo pouches, shovel, troddel and bayonet- SS weathered/painted
belt- Cots?
goggles- altered WWII DML
rifle- DID Max Muller
base- homemade

Here is my latest WW1 figures thought you might like to see them.
I used  these two images as a touchstone for this dio.
When the doughboys arrived in France they were imagined as wild indians by their French allies. Playing off this notion, I’ve tried to give this group of soldiers a devil-may-care, gunslinger feel, mixed with a heavy dose of relief at successfully completing their first night patrol.
Not 100% accurate as most quickly replaced their cumbersome campaign hats with French style side caps, but I liked the more western feel of their original headgear.
The campaign hats, the base, 2 of the three French gas mask bags and the neckerchiefs are from scratch.
The Chauchat light machine gun, the Winchester 12 gauge, the pistol belts, and the shot gunners holster were augmented from existing items to be more accurate.
